Fresh Image Recovery Arrives in Preview

Microsoft has introduced Cloud Rebuild, a new recovery option for Windows 11 that can wipe and reinstall the operating system by pulling a fresh image and the PC’s drivers directly from Windows Update. This capability is included in KB5127936, an optional preview update released on October 28 for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 26H2. The rollout is currently gradual.

If your Windows installation still loads, you can find the option under Settings > System > Recovery labeled as “Rebuild PC.” If the system fails to boot after several attempts, it falls back to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). In WinRE, Cloud Rebuild appears under the Troubleshoot menu.

Beyond Standard Reset Options

While the existing “Reset this PC” menu has offered a Cloud download mode for some time, Microsoft states that Cloud Rebuild goes further. It grabs drivers along with the OS image and does not depend on the installed copy of Windows being intact. This distinction matters because it provides a reliable path to recovery when the local system files are too corrupted to initiate a standard reset.

However, users should note that this is a clean slate operation. The system drive gets reformatted, which wipes applications, settings, user accounts, and local files. Only data synced to cloud services like OneDrive will survive the process. For those handing off their devices, there is a sanitize mode that securely erases the drive first. IT administrators also have the ability to kick off a rebuild remotely through the Recovery CSP.

Gradual Rollout and Data Risks

As Cloud Rebuild rolls out gradually via the optional preview update, users must weigh the convenience of a driver-aware recovery against the total loss of local data. Since the feature relies on Windows Update for both the image and drivers, a stable internet connection is essential during the process. It remains unclear how quickly this feature will become available to all Windows 11 users outside the preview channels or if it will replace existing recovery methods entirely.
