Clip-On Audio Hits US Shelves

Samsung has confirmed that its inaugural pair of clip-on earbuds, the Galaxy Buds On, will hit the US market in early November. The price point is set at $229, marking the company’s entry into the open-ear wearable category. This follows an initial unveiling earlier this month, where the device was positioned as a solution for situations demanding environmental awareness alongside hands-free convenience.

While the US launch is imminent, European consumers will have to wait longer; Samsung stated that availability in Europe is scheduled for early 2027. The delay suggests a phased rollout strategy, likely prioritizing markets with higher adoption rates for new wearable form factors or specific regional regulatory requirements.

AI-Driven Fit and Extended Battery Life

The core appeal of the Galaxy Buds On lies in their design philosophy. Samsung utilized AI-assisted optimizations and physics simulations to refine the hardware for “a diverse range of ear shapes,” drawing on data from more than 119 million sources. This approach aims to solve the common discomfort issues associated with traditional in-ear monitors by using a clip-on mechanism that rests outside the ear canal.

Under the hood, each bud houses an 11.3mm driver paired with a 61mAh battery. Samsung claims these components deliver up to 9.5 hours of music playback or 5.5 hours of call time on a single charge. With the accompanying charging case, total endurance extends to 38 hours for music and 25 hours for calls. Connectivity is handled via Bluetooth 6.2, supporting Samsung’s Seamless Codec alongside AAC, SBC, and LC3 standards.

Functionality extends beyond audio playback. The buds integrate with Gemini for hands-free conversation, allow users to capture thoughts via Quick Voice Memo, and support head gestures to accept or decline calls. These features target users who need to stay connected without isolating themselves from their surroundings, such as runners, cyclists, or office workers who prefer ambient noise.

A Niche Entry with Broad Appeal

The Galaxy Buds On represent a calculated move by Samsung to diversify its audio portfolio beyond standard TWS (True Wireless Stereo) models. By leveraging AI for ergonomic design and emphasizing situational awareness, the company addresses a growing segment of consumers who find traditional earbuds intrusive or unsafe in certain contexts.

However, the $229 price tag places them in a competitive bracket against established brands like Bose and Jabra, which have long dominated the open-ear space. Success will depend on whether the seamless integration with Samsung‘s ecosystem—particularly the Gemini voice assistant and head-gesture controls—provides enough utility to justify the cost for non-Samsung users. For now, the November US launch serves as the primary test bed for this new form factor before it expands globally.
