What do you do with an older M.2 SATA SSD? A quick and easy solution is to repurpose it for extra storage on the go. Often enough, they are faster than a USB flash drive.

USB 3.0 enclosures to Repurpose M.2 SATA SSD‘s are already widely available online. They all offer some different options depending on the use case.

What came as a shock to me is that the product on the Amazon Canada page shows lots of reviews with a rate of 3.9 stars. In the past few months, many indicated that it doesn't work. I carefully read the details of the product. B key and B+M key SATA are the only supported drives.

Many complained that the board with the M.2 SSD drive wouldn't go back in. My experience is with it is positive. I'm dishing out a 5-stars!

Transfer Rate

Transferring data from my standard storage HDD running at 7200RPM to an SSD runs at an average of 96MB/s. Completing the same task from SSD to SSD gets done at much higher rates avg 319MB/s.

The SATA SSD in question is a Micron 512GB SATA SSD. You often see this drive type in off the shelf laptops from places such as Dell, Best Buy, HP etc.

What's the purpose of this exquisite storage device? To be used with my laptop as a storage source while I'm on the go. For many, it's easier to simply connect the storage device, dump the files and call it a day.
